Character Name: Terra Branford
Character Canon: Final Fantasy VI
History: Wiki History
AU History: Terra has absolutely no memories of her life prior to the experiments of Gigas's research facility. Her mother was a mage, and her father was a powerful Shifter. For years they lived in hiding within the city of Sanctuary, staging small acts of rebellion against the military. Eventually Terra was conceived and born to her parents, who loved and cherished her, promising that they would find a way to liberate the city so she could grow up knowing the taste of freedom.
But their rebellion couldn't last forever, and they were eventually discovered by Gigan spies who killed the mage and retained the Shifter for further study at the lab. He died in one of their preservation chambers, his essence extracted and infused into other experimental subjects to make them Enhanced.
From infancy Terra was heavily experimented upon, the tests cruel and designed to crush any will she might have had. Because of her mixed heritage, she proved to have profound power that remained untapped, and they worked relentlessly trying to figure out how to access that power. They found success at last when they unleashed her on some of their finest soldiers, and she fried fifty of them in under three minutes.
Deemed as extremely dangerous but useful, they kept her under strict control with their technology so that she only accepted orders given to her via a slave crown placed on her head. During the final battle against Union, the squad that was meant to use Terra was ambushed, their vehicle flipped by a Union Pokemon trainer and his trusty Rhyperior. Terra was flung from the jeep as well and struck her head on a rock. It dislodged the slave crown and effectively erased almost every last memory she had of her years in Union.
When she awoke, she found herself being nursed back to health by the trainer who took pity on her, claiming that his Rhyperior insisted on sparing Terra. She had been in a coma ever since that day. Though the man trusted his Rhyperior's judgment, he wanted to see if Terra was worthy of her freedom or if he should turn her over to the law. He gave her one of Rhyperior's eggs and told her that if she could manage to take care of the egg and hatch it, she could go with his blessing. She was nervous about the task and fretted over whether she could accomplish something like that, but eventually she became the proud 'mother' of a newborn Rhyhorn. When the man saw the delight on her face and the way the Rhyhorn followed her everywhere, he was convinced that he'd made the right decision in sparing her. Terra set out on her own, unsure of who she was or what she was going to do now that she was free. All she could recall was her name and a man with a painted face with a haunting laugh...
Canon Personality: Terra has a vast arc of character development as the game progresses. Initially she begins as fearful and unsure of herself and her abilities. She knows she's different from others, and was deeply hurt when people responded to her powers with fear or distrust. She was relentlessly pursued by the empire for her powers of magic, since it was such a rare gift that no one (that they knew of) was supposed to be able to possess.
But as she gained friends, she found herself slowly learning to trust in the strength and support of others. Initially unwilling and scared to fight, she reluctantly decides to help the Returners when she begins to understand just how much she's needed to fight back against the Empire. She grows in stages, once when she makes her initial contact with a frozen Esper that causes her to go wild and transform into an Esper herself, and again when she finds a village of children to protect as she discovers what it means to truly love someone. By the end of the game she's strong and confident, and the love she feels for the children of Mobliz as well as her friends gives her strength and control over her Esper heritage.
Terra often battles with her insecurity over her unique ability, particularly up until she discovers the truth about her parents. With Edgar, she notes that a normal girl probably would have found him charming, but she was far from being normal herself. Struggling with her identity proves to be a big ordeal for her, and when Edgar and Locke freak out over her first demonstration of magic, she seems deeply hurt. Locke's insistence on protecting her and treating her like a normal person does much to help her overcome this insecurity and strengthen her trust in his cause.
Terra is an inherently kind person. She has a good heart, and though her fear initially overshadows her other emotions, this kindness and willingness to help people eventually guides her on her path. It's possible that things might have gone differently had Terra been discovered by Returners more driven by vengeance and anger, but unlikely. She eventually agrees to be the hope of the Returners in spite of her fear, and dedicates herself to pushing back the Empire alongside the dear friends she's made along the way.
Evidence of this kindness is most easily seen in the way Moogles and children react to her. The Moogles immediately move to protect her from the empire's soldiers early on in the game, defending her valiantly in the mines of Narshe. And the children of Mobliz adore her so much that they call her their 'mama' and yell at the other heroes when they think they've come to take their mama away. Terra loves both Moogles and children, and has a strong maternal streak in that she'd do anything to protect them and keep them safe and happy. Though we don't see much of what happens during the year she's stranded in Mobliz, it isn't hard to imagine that she used her magic to cure their illness and injuries, looking after them in the absence of their parents after Kefka destroyed the adults with his Light of Judgment.
Throughout the game, Terra doesn't easily trust anyone who seems to seek power. Even Banon, the head of the Returners, isn't someone she easily agrees to help because he's interested in her magic more than herself. At the grave of a fallen soldier, she wonders aloud why so many are willing to sacrifice the lives of others just for the sake of power, and asks if they're really that desperate just to be more like her. The majority of the people she's met who sought power have only abused that power and hurt other people, so she's developed a natural aversion to anyone who seeks it out, especially to an unhealthy degree (looking at you, Kefka).
Though Terra's lack of confidence and constant wrestling with her identity hampers her a great deal in the first half of the game, after the defeat of Phunbaba she becomes much more determined and dedicated to her goals. Initially Phunbaba is able to easily defeat her in her Esper form, and she becomes incredibly discouraged, refusing to rejoin her friends because there's still so much she doesn't understand about herself. But when she realizes how much she loves the children of Mobliz, she's able to summon incredible power and defeat the marauding monster. After this, she becomes a dependable ally to the rest of the party and can face down Kefka even with all of his god-like power.
Because Terra didn't exactly grow up with a normal childhood...or a childhood at all...most of her social interactions and understandings are ridiculously stunted. She can be somewhat blunt in the way she speaks to other people without understanding why people would react poorly to her honest words. She asks Celes straight up if she's capable of feeling love, inadvertently insulting the general when she just wanted to know what love was in the first place. She speaks her mind a little too freely, and she can sometimes seem rude even though no offense is truly meant. She had no idea what to make of Edgar when he tried hitting on her, and all of his charm went completely over her green-haired head. She's very inquisitive, and unafraid to ask for better understanding of all the emotions she's not accustomed to having, particularly the emotion of love.
AU Deviation: As Terra will be starting off in the game in a point similar to how she begins in her canon history, it's difficult to determine just how her personality will develop. As Gigas isn't actively pursuing her the way the Vector Empire was, she probably has more time to catch her breath, and plenty of kind people in Union that will likely influence Terra into wanting to protect the city. Instead of being fond of Moogles, this affection will likely transfer easily to affection for Pokemon. Initially she'll be nervous and insecure, but as the game progresses and her background gradually becomes known to her, she'll most likely grow into someone strong and confident with some time and good CR.
Canon Abilities: Terra is a powerful user of magic, one of very few in the world with a natural inclination for it. As she grows in experience, she can learn spells on her own, with a strong affinity for fire. After the party is introduced to Magicite, she's able to learn additional spells and summon the Esper from whom the Magicite was made. She's proficient with swords, knives, and multiple types of armor. Her most unique ability is her transformation into her Esper form -- a humanoid creature with wild hair, predominantely lavender in color. In her Esper form, her strength and magic abilities are doubled. Her ability to maintain this form is extremely limited at first, but as her confidence grows, so too does her ability to hold her Esper form for extended periods of time. As an Esper, she can fly across the world with incredible speed.
Enlightened Abilities: Types - Fire/Flying
Abilities: Child of Knowledge Unbound, Homunculus
As a homunculus, Terra's marks are a little more mild, at least at first. Her amnesia is mostly caused by the constant experimentation and subjugation to make her a homunculus in the first place, and the unnatural green color of her hair suggests she's definitely not normal. But her biggest instability is her transformation into her Enlightened evolution (similar to her Esper form). She isn't able to control this transformation or keep it for long at her lower levels, and is only able to draw upon it when under enormous duress. Using it in her first stage exhausts her, and she's unable to fight until she's had a chance to rest. In her second stage she can hold the form a little longer, but it still drains her power. But in her final stage she can hold the form for up to five minutes and not be wearied at all.
Level 1 Mastered Move: Fira - Similar to Ember, Terra can summon a small burst of flames to attack her opponents, possibly leaving them with the Burn status effect.
Level 30 Mastered Move: Firaga - Similar to Incinerate, in that it remains a much more intense fire spell. However, it burns not only berries but any non-stone item that someone may be holding.
Level 55 Mastered Move: Ultima - Similar to Blue Flare, this fire-based spell is virtually unstoppable in its level of incredible destruction, manifesting as an expanding wash of bright blue light. It's extremely powerful, able to tear up chunks of earth as it spreads outward in a radius from Terra's position. The most dangerous aspect of the spell, however, is that it can hurt allies as well as foes if they happen to be standing too close to her when she unleashes her magic.
Starter Pokémon: Rhyhorn
Notes/Special Considerations: I haven't made any concrete plans just yet, but if any future characters or NPCs wants to try hunting her down to make use of her homunculus brain and fantastical fire powers, I'm so down. You guys have full permission to make use of any part of her background as you see fit.

First-Person: (OOC: Terra probably won't want to use the Warp Bands for a while, in fear of any Gigas scientists finding out where she is, but for the sake of the app we'll assume she's at a point where she feels safe enough.)
Why do your Pokemon follow you?
[The question comes somewhat abruptly from a young woman with green hair, one arm folded around her knees, the other holding the wristband communicator out in front of her. She seems curious, maybe a touch concerned given the lack of smile on her small mouth.]
I know the Warp Bands are supposed to connect our minds. I understand that. But why do they choose to continue following us, instead of returning to their lives in the wild? They seemed happy and content to live on their own. So why do they change their way of living so quickly?
[Her head tips toward her left shoulder.]
Some of you can understand what your Pokemon are saying, so maybe you can tell me what they see in people that makes them trust us so freely.
[Because she really doesn't understand it. The Gigans capture Pokemon and enslave them. Why would a Pokemon ever trust a human after seeing how their fellow Pokemon are treated?]
Third-Person: Terra stepped out of the old man's cabin, and her slim arm rose almost instinctively to shield her eyes from the brightness of the summer sunlight. The smells of fresh grass and wildflowers were alien to her, and she wondered if she'd ever even seen the outdoors before. Her skin was so pale, so it was possible that she'd never been allowed out of...wherever they'd trained her, she supposed. But surely she must have at some point. The old man had found her unconscious in the middle of the plains, he'd said. She breathed deeply and closed her eyes, waiting for the scents to trigger something, some long-buried memory.
Nothing.
Slowly she exhaled, her gaze falling downward in disappointment. Why couldn't she remember anything at all? Who had given Terra her name? How had she found herself fighting for Gigas? Was it something she'd wanted?
There were simply too many questions, and her head throbbed painfully. Terra winced, pressing her fingertips against her temple.
A horned muzzle nudged gently against the back of her knee. ...Well, 'gently' enough that Terra's leg buckled and she nearly spilled into the grass. She stumbled and looked back into her Rhyhorn's earnest and craggy face. It made a low-pitched grumble of concern, prompting a tiny smile from the young woman. Placing her hands on its rocky back, she half-draped herself against the Pokemon and nuzzled close. At least she wasn't alone. She needed answers, but it seemed she had plenty of time to discover them at her own pace, and to find herself little by little.
"Thank you," she said, smoothing her hand over its hide.
Wedge crooned in a low bass, content to wait for Terra until she was ready to start walking before lumbering closely at her side.
